Roller Coaster: The Roller Coaster Designer Werner
Stengel, Klaus Schuetzmannsky |
|
Description |
Most everyone is familiar with the sensation of
excitement and awe watching the steep curves and daring
constructions of big roller coasters. This informative and
entertaining compilation presents the numerous innovations
by civil engineer Werner Stengel, the "Master of
horror", in color diagrams and numerous photographs.
The first German steel roller coaster, the Wild Cat, was
built in the 1960s and reformed the construction of roller
coasters all over the world. According to Stengel's
calculations, and thanks to his unbroken creativity in
addition with Anton Schwarzkopf, technical specialties
like the famous vertical loop, the heartline and spline
curve calculations came into realization during the
following years. This 40 years history of more than 600
hundred calculated roller coasters, new developments and
changing forms is enlivened by Stengel's personal life
story and gives an insight into the Munich-based Stengel
engineering office, the market leader in modern roller
coaster design. |

Utopia by Lincoln Child (Novel) |
Description |
Utopia is a new indoor themepark in Nevada's desert.
Nearly 70,000 people can visit the gigantic dome structure
every day. Inside, they find four themed areas with
state-of-the-art rides: Take a ride on the "Notting
Hill" roller coaster with its 3D-holograms or try out
"Escape from Waterdark", a simulation of
weightlessness at the themed area Callisto. But something
is wrong at Utopia. Some of the self-programming robots
are becoming erratic, so park administrators quietly bring
the robots' brilliant creator from the East Coast to fix
the problem before it gets any worse. Dr. Andrew Warne
brings his daughter, for he doesn't believe there is
anything wrong with his creations. But on the day of their
arrival, a mysterious band of ruthless criminals
infiltrates not only the park, but its computerized
systems. The unknown terrorists appear to control
everything, from the simplest robot to the most dangerous
ride. And if their demands aren't met, thousands of
innocent park-goers will be killed. The SCI-FI thriller by
Lincoln Child, co-author of novels like "The Relic"
or "Reliquary", ties up to the technology
stories of Michael Crichton ("Jurassic Park", "Westworld").
Lincoln Child creates a sophisticated world with
audio-animatronic characters, ever friendly cast members,
and in detail described rides. Hidden side blows on
existing companies like the well known roller coaster
manufacturer "Taittinger & Rochefort" are
included. Utopia is an excellent and thrilling "ride"
through a next generation themepark |

Mouse Tales: A behind-the-ears look at Disneyland and
More Mouse Tales: A closer peek backstage at Disneyland by David
Koenig |
Description |
David Koenig, a freelance writer, became friendly with
many part-time employees of Disneyland in Anaheim. When
they joined a major strike in 1984, Koenig was inspired to
write this book. Drawing on interviews and extensive
research, Koenig describes in detail Walt Disney's plan
and the goals for his amusement park; the
behind-the-scenes mechanisms of the attractions; the
selection, training, and expectations of the employees;
and Disneyland's secrets: Have you ever heared about the "members
only" club 33 at New Orleans Square? The answer
inside the "Mouse Tales". Koenig's tales may
surprise some, since many of its specifics are so at odds
with the Disneyland's ultrahygienic image. The sequel More
Mouse Tales starts there, where the last humorous as well
as informative one ends: Get more stories of the Mouse!
David Koenig also writes for the internet magazine

Walt Disney Treasures: Disneyland USA |
Facts |
Total running
time: 3 Hours 48 Minutes, encoding: region 1, number of
discs: 2 |
Description |
Walt Disney's dream came true - Learn more about the
first ever themepark in the USA! To finance Disneyland,
Walt Disney turned to the new medium of television. As
host Leonard Maltin notes on this two-disc set of
televised specials for the amusement park, Disney used the
series to promote it, "and no one seemed to mind."
ABC agreed to invest in return for a weekly one-hour
program. The "Disneyland" TV show premiered on
October 27, 1954: "Disneyland Story" introduced
the park and its various lands, which would be the subject
of future programs. The opening-day special, "Dateline
Disneyland" (July 17, 1955), attracted an estimated
audience of 90 million - virtually every television
household in America. The two DVDs includes a special
presentation of four Disneyland television specials - The
Disneyland Story, Dateline Disneyland, Operation
Disneyland, Disneyland After Dark - plus The Disneyland
10th Anniversary Show, all originally broadcast between
1955 and 1970, and hosted by Walt Disney himself. Also
includes additional archival footage of Disneyland's
opening day and other rare materials. |

Coney Island: The American Experience |
Facts |
Total running
time: 2 hours, VHS |
Description |
What had been a wasteland of sand dunes on the Brooklyn
oceanfront became the nation's playground for decades, and
as historian David McCullough notes while introducing this
documentary, "There had been other amusement parks,
but there was only one Coney Island." At its peak in
the early decades of the 20th century, Coney Island
actually boasted three enormous amusement parks, and their
stories, and the stories of some of the millions of
revelers who flocked to them, are beautifully told in this
film. Coney Island was a zany place, and glimpses of the
rides at Steeplechase Park, the amazing lighted rooftops
at Luna Park, and the bizarre entertainments at Dreamland
provide a wistful look at a vanished American past. |
